“I was attracted to him… even though I knew I shouldn't like a guy like that... why do people become attracted to those other than themselves?”
— Shinji Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion chapter 75

Shinji Ikari (碇 シンジ Ikari Shinji) is a bisexual character from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Biography

Shinji Ikari is the protagonist of the Evangelion series, he is the Third Child and the pilot of Evangelion Unit 01. He first appears when he is called by his estranged father to pilot the biomech Evangelion Unit 01 to fight the Angels attacking Tokyo-3.

Appearance

Shinji has blue eyes, dark brown hair and is an average height relative to the other teenaged pilots in the series. He is most often seen wearing his school uniform, a white button-up shirt, black pants, navy blue undershirt, belt and white tennis shoes. The plugsuit he is also seen wearing while piloting Eva is skin-tight with blue, navy blue and a baby blue with red detailing. In Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition (or Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo), he wears a blue and black plugsuit with rib like structures along the sides of the chest and red cores with green detailing to pilot Evangelion Unit 13.

Personality

Shinji, although outwardly gentle most of the time, is introverted, shy and often seems disconnected from the world around him. He strives to do what those around him want him to do in order to receive praise and validation, meaning most other characters see him as a pushover. He has a deep fear of being hated or abandoned, so he often strays away from making connections with others in the fear that they will leave him. Shinji, however, is very introspective and aware of his faults, holding a deep hatred towards himself.

Sexuality

The series clearly portrays him as being attracted to both his female and male copilots. The creator of Evangelion, Hideaki Anno, states that his male copilot Kaworu Nagisa was meant to be a love interest. “To Shinji, Kaworu was the first friend he could open up to, and he could also be someone that could be a same-sex partner.”[1]This is also apparent throughout the series as Shinji is shown blushing very often when around the other boy. In the official manga of the series, Shinji canonically has a crush on Kaworu, with the manga even stating, “I was attracted to him… why do people fall in love with those other than themselves?”

Kaworu Nagisa

Shinji is heavily implied to have had a crush on his copilot Kaworu[1], as in their short screen time together in the original series, the two became very close very fast. It’s implied that Shinji sees Kaworu almost as a perfect or idealized person, someone who will offer him only love and praise with little in return Shinji’s part. Shinji almost immediately makes himself emotionally vulnerable to Kaworu in a way that he had done to no other character; “But I did hate my father… Why am I talking to Kaworu about this stuff?” Shinji often blushes when Kaworu speaks to him and especially when Kaworu holds his hand. In the manga adaptation of the anime, Shinji remarks, “I was attracted to him… Even though I knew I shouldn’t like a guy like that.” Shinji is also distraught after the other boy’s death, and feeling deep emotional loss, he states “That's the first time anybody’s ever said they loved me. Ever... I loved him... He was much better than I am. He should have survived!." [2]Kaworu very clearly feels romantically about Shinji, confessing his love for him very quickly after the two had met and even claiming “You know, I might have been born so that I could meet you.”[1]

They have a similar relationship in the New Theatrical Edition.

Asuka Langley Soryu

The relationship between Asuka and Shinji in NGE is debated by the fandom and remains arguably ambivalent in the actual NGE canon, but both do show a clear mutual attraction and an unhealthy dependence on one another for affection and validation, all overshadowed by jealously and misunderstanding. Their relationship is a clear representation of the "Hedgehog's Dilemma" or a key concept in the anime that uses hedgehogs as a metaphor for human intimacy; people distance themselves from others to avoid getting emotionally hurt. Asuka and Shinji are both lonely and traumatized, with both constantly vying for affection and validation from others. Asuka aggressively tries to prove herself to get other's attention and Shinji avoids anything that could possibly hurt him, being very isolated from others and lashing out violently when he's hurt. Every attempt they make to form a relationship to one another (whether it be platonic or romantic) ends in both being hurt.

Asuka Langley Shikinami

Shinji and Shikinami have a slightly different relationship in the Rebuild of Evangelion series (or the New Theatrical Edition). Shikinami is still hotheaded and slightly mean to the boy, but it's not rooted in trauma, loneliness and a desire for validation like in NGE and it's unrelated to the Hedgehog's Dilemma. Both admit their feelings to each other in 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, in a scene on the shore of the LCL ocean that mirrors the final scene of End of Evangelion.[3] Asuka admits that before the 14-year time-skip between 2.0 and 3.0, she had feelings for him, but had since grown out of him since he was dematerialized in the entry plug of Unit 01 during those 14 years.

Mari Makinami Illustrious

The relationship between Mari Makinami and Shinji Ikari within the New Theatrical Edition has been up to much fandom speculation since the release of Rebuild 3.0 + 1.0, but many interpret their relationship as romantic due to the ending of the movie where they run off together while holding hands, being followed by the end credits.[4].
