Phastos is a gay character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Biography[]
Phastos is an Eternal, a synthetic being created by the Celestial Arishem the Judge in order to fight and exterminate the Deviants, creatures also created by Arishem but who had escaped from his control. Along with nine other Eternals, Phastos was sent to Earth to eliminate the Deviants of this planet and help Humanity achieve the required level of technological advancement so they could thrive. For most of his life, Phastos was ignorant of his true nature, and instead believed that the Eternals came from a planet called Olympia. Under his leader Ajak's oversight, Phastos enabled mankind to create many technologies, but eventually came to regret what he had done upon witnessing the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Disgusted by what he had helped to achieve, and with the Deviants being seeminly extinct on Earth, Phastos left his mission as an Eternal and started a family. He married Ben Stoss, with whom he had a son, Jack Stoss. For ten years, Phastos lived a happy family life, until two other Eternals, Sersi and Ikaris, came to him to warn him that the Deviants had returned and killed Ajak. Fearing that the Deviants could one day be a threat to his family, Phastos agreed to embark on a mission to figure out the reasons of their return. During their investigation as the Eternals gathered again, Phastos was shocked upon learning that the ultimate purpose of the Eternal was to make sure that human population would climb enough to enable the birth of new Celestial, Tiamut, which would obliterate the Earth, and thus kill Phastos' husband and son.
Going against Arishem's will, and despite the death of fellow Eternal Gilgamesh and the betrayal of Ikaris, Phastos joined the effort of halting the birth of Tiamut. He notably designed the Uni-Mind, which was used by Sersi to stop Tiamut's emergence, seemingly killing him, after which he was able to return to his family. Phastos' happiness did not last long, however, as he, along with Sersi and fellow Eternal Kingo, was abducted by Arishem in retaliation for what they had done to Tiamut.
Appearance[]
Phastos looks around 40 years old and has dark brown skin, short coily black hair and dark brown eyes.
Personality[]
Phastos is a kind and compassionate individual, with a genuine will to help others. He took his mission to help Humanity at heart, being willing to offer them many pieces of technology even when it was far too early for them to use it. He was devastated by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as he blamed himself for the loss of countless lives since he had helped manking further their technological development. However, his distress did not prevent him from building a happy life with his husband and son, who he is keen to protect from the dangers of the outside world. Phastos despises the use of violence, and tries to teach his son that it is not a good way to solve problems. When the situation needs it, however, Phastos is willing to fight for what he holds dear, as demonstrated when he fights Ikaris after the latter betrayed the Eternals.
Sexuality[]
Phastos is openly gay. With the exception of his marriage to Ben Stoss, nothing is known of his love life.
Reaction[]
Phastos has been presented as the first gay superhero of the MCU movies. Although the movie faced minor criticism for making Phastos gay (something which does not appear in the comics), Brian Tyree Henry's character was praised for giving LGBT people more visibility in superhero movies. GLAAD considered that Phastos' appearance was "what audiences have been waiting for".
Relationships[]
Ben Stoss[]
Ben is Phastos' husband. He is aware that Phastos is not a true human but an Eternal with tremendous capabilities, but completely accepts it. Phastos and Ben are happily married and even raised a son together. When Sersi and Ikaris came to Phastos and asked for his assistance, it was Ben who encouraged him to go so that he could make sure that the world would not end and that they could have a chance to watch their son grow.
