Klaus Hargreeves is a pansexual non-binary character from The Umbrella Academy.

Appearance[]
Klaus is 6'0 ft tall, and is fairy lanky and thin. He has curly dark brown hair that he wears short in the first season, but grows out down to his shoulders by Season Three. They have a very light tan, and several tattoos decorating their body. Including the famous 'Hello' and 'Goodbye' tattoos on the palms of his hands.
They have well maintained facial hair, included a mustache and chin stubble shaved in the shape of a goatee. He has thick rectangular eyebrows and light green eyes.
He wears a layer of smudged black eyeshadow around his eyes at almost all times. He generally dresses in an alternative fashion style, seeming to prefer wearing tight feminine or androgynes clothing, paired with some kind of loose overcoat. He also always wear the dog tags of their deceased boyfriend, Dave Katz. Only having been seen taking them off once since Daves death.
Personality[]
Klaus is a flamboyant, humorous person. They often cover up their own traumas and misery with snark, and simultaneous self-deprecation and self-aggrandizement. Switching between the two constantly.
Klaus can often be selfish and cowardly, he makes himself out to be more useless and incompetent than he is. Playing into their siblings view of him as a useless junkie, as a result, he is often dismissed by his siblings. In spite of this, they are shown to have a deeper insight than assumed, often figuring out or discovering plot relevant information before anyone else, and has even shown to occasionally be a voice of reason to his family's impulsive decisions.
Despite their tense and strained relationship with their siblings, they care intensely about and are deeply loyal to their siblings. Wishing to spend time with and develop genuine caring relationships with them. Which they succeed in doing as the series continues.
Sexuality[]
Klauses is attracted to both men and woman, and have been in several romantic and sexual relationships with various men and woman throughout his life.
Klaus also offhandedly states that he 'hates group breakups', and had previously been in a relationship with a pair of twins. Confirming he has been in both polyamorous and monogamous relationships.
Robert Sheehan, Klauses actor, stated in an interview that he considers Klaus to be Pansexual[1].

Gender[]
In the canon series, Klaus is never directly stated to be nonbinary, though he seems to disregard any binary gender norms, dressing in both traditionally masculine and traditionally feminine clothing. Klauses gender is never exactly made clear, and is left up to the interpretation of the viewer whether he is on the nonbinary spectrum or is a gender non-conforming cis man.
In an interview Klauses actor, Robert Sheehan, said “[Klaus is] Not necessarily a man, he's kind of just this creature that's not bound by traditional societal norms like 'man', 'woman', 'masculinity', 'femininity'. He just sort of… is.” [2] Sheehan also refers to his character by both he/him and they/them pronouns despite the characters in the show only referring to them by he/him pronouns[3].

Unnamed Ex-Boyfriend[]
Klaus mentions to Five that his longest relationship lasted three weeks, and that was because he needed a place to sleep. But that he did make great osso buco.
Dave Katz[]
Klaus accidentally ends up traveling back in time and gets stuck in the Vietnam war, where he meets Dave. They fall in love but, unfortunately, Dave dies on the front lines while Klaus is desperately trying to call for a medic; it's unsuccessful and Dave takes his last breath in Klaus' arms. Klaus then returns to his proper timeline after spending 10 months with Dave. Because of his strong desire to see Dave again, Klaus tries to get sober so he can conjure him. It is shown multiple times that Klaus cares deeply for this man. For example, he goes as far as attempting sobriety and asks Diego to tie him up to a chair and announcing that Dave was "the only person I've ever truly loved more than myself."
