Kirby lives in Dream Land, a pastoral region of Planet Popstar. The games don't offer any backstory except that they are considered to be the "protector of Dream Land".
In the anime, Kirby was a failed creation of the sorcerer eNeMeE that would not obey his orders. They escaped, were recruited by the Star Warriors, and was called out of training prematurely to fight monsters.

Gender[]
In Japanese media, Kirby is usually described using gender-neutral pronouns and terminology. English localizations use masculine pronouns when describing Kirby, however, their gender is otherwise left vague. It is often implied that Kirby does not have a gender, or if they do, that it is a mystery.
In a piece of art posted to the official Kirby twitter account during and in celebration of Valentine's Day, Kirby is shown with many of their female friends making cookies. In Japan, Valentine's Day remains a holiday of love, it being common to give gifts in the form of sweets to others. But in Japan it is more commonly women giving gifts to men. In another piece of art, Kirby is shown with many of their male friends, also making cookies. This art was posted on White Day. White Day is a Japanese holiday where people- commonly men- give reciprocal gifts to those who gave them gifts received on Valentine's Day. Kirby being shown participating in both "girls only" events as well as "boys only" events is further proof of their identity as non-binary.
This is not the only example of this: In art posted during and in celebration of Hinamatsuri, A Japanese holiday also known as "Girl's Day", Kirby is shown dressed as an Empress doll.
