Joey Gutierrez is a gay character from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..
Biography[]
Joey used to live a normal life, being rather comfortable with his sexuality after he came out and started dating other men. However, his life took a dramatic turn shortly after he broke up with his boyfriend, as his consumption of tainted fish oil pills revealed his powers as an Inhuman, an individual gifted with superhuman abilities. Joey's powers enabled him to manipulate metal, but he was initially unable to control it, putting the lives of others and himself at risk.
Joey's unleashed powers put him on the radar of both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the ATCU, organizations that were tracking down superpowered individuals for different purposes. Joey was eventually taken in and protected by S.H.I.E.L.D., who offered him to join the organization as a field agent, training to join a team of Inhumans known as the Secret Warriors. Joey proved to be an efficient operative, joining S.H.I.E.L.D. for various missions against their archenemy, HYDRA, and recruiting another Latino Inhuman into the team, Elena Rodriguez.
While on a date with Kevin, Joey was summoned for another major mission against HYDRA. Although the mission was a success, Joey emerged with the trauma of having killed a HYDRA operative, which left him heavily scarred. Moreover, as it was established that one of the Secret Warriors had fallen under enemy influence, Joey fell under suspicion. His name was eventually cleared, but Joey took it as the final blow that he wanted to leave S.H.I.E.L.D. to return to his former normal life.
Appearance[]
Joey is a Latino man in his thirties, with short brown hair and beard. Due to his work as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., he went through physical training that left him in good physical condition. During mission, he wears a dark black and blue combat uniform.
Personality[]
Joey has been described as a compassionate individual, both before and after he joined S.H.I.E.L.D. Upon discovering his powers, he was terrified by the damage he caused around him due to his inability to control them, and was described by Bobbi Morse as someone usually more concerned for others than he is for himself. Although shaken by the prospect of leaving his former life behind him, he adapted quite well to his new life. He was left pretty shaken after being responsible for the death of an enemy operative, and ultimately decided that the life in S.H.I.E.L.D. was not for him after he was suspected of having been infected by a parasite that would have made him an enemy of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Sexuality[]
Joey was revealed to be gay in his first appearance when Bobbi told him about his entire social media history. Joey was the first openly gay character in the MCU. Joey stated that he kept his homosexuality secret for a long time, which made him miserable during his youth. He eventually mustered the courage to come out, enabling him to be more at ease with who he truly was. During his time in S.H.I.E.L.D., Joey never faced any form of discrimination because of his sexual orientation (which was, in the end, far from being Joey's most notable trait due to his superpowers).
