Homura Akemi is a lesbian character from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Biography[]

Homura is a transfer student who was hospitalized for a heart disease, after which she became friends with the show's protagonist, Madoka Kaname. She discovers that Madoka is a magical girl and witnesses her death. As a result, Homura decides to become a magical girl in order to traverse back in time and save Madoka. Since then, she has traveled back in time multiple times in attempts to save Madoka's life. In the Rebellion movie, Homura becomes a witch. Madoka, in her god form, comes to take Homura in accordance with the Law of the Cycle. However, Homura fractures Madoka's existence, rewriting the universe as Madoka once did and becoming a "devil".

Appearance[]

Homura is 5'2'' and has black hair and purple eyes. She wears glasses and two braids However, her attempts to save Madoka spur her to assume a new demeanor and appearance, at which point Homura ceases to wear glasses and begins to wear her hair down. After Madoka rewrites the universe, Homura wears Madoka's hair ribbon.

Personality[]

Homura used to be very shy and was known for her lack of confidence, but after multiple iterations of being a magical girl, she adopted a notably cold and serious demeanor, as well as an increased sense of confidence. Despite appearances, Homura isn't emotionless at all; indeed, she is capable of hiding her sadness, as she is already accustomed to the suffering.

Sexuality[]

Though the Rebellion movie explicitly states Homura's feelings towards Madoka to be "love", in an interview, Gen Urobuchi's response to the inquiry of whether Homura is in love with Madoka was "probably". When the inquirer asked why he decided to portray a homosexual love, Urobuchi answered that such a strong friendship had turned the nature of the relationship into a love-like one but without the sexual attraction, in their case [1]. Because Homura only shows attraction to women throughout the series and is never seen showing attraction to men, it’s surmised that she is a lesbian. Since he said their relationship don't have sexual attraction it could also mean that she's also asexual.

Reaction[]

The majority of fans accept Homura as a lesbian who is in love with Madoka. Coinciding with this, Homura x Madoka is one of the most popular femslash ships in Japan, and Madoka Magica is one of the most popular shows in the Yuri fandom.

Relationships[]

Madoka Kaname[]

Madoka saved Homura's life from a witch, leading to a strong friendship between them. After Madoka dies for the first time, Homura develops extremely strong feelings towards Madoka, almost to the point of obsession. Homura spent years in a time loop desperately trying to save her from death. When Madoka rewrote the universe, Homura was the only person who remembered her. At the end of the second movie, Homura wears the hair ribbon Madoka gave to her. In the Madoka Magica Rebellion movie, Homura views Madoka with reverence, determined to keep her safe and with her to the point where she rewrites the universe like Madoka did to make Madoka a normal girl again. No matter what, to be with Madoka is always Homura's objective. Though Madoka loves Homura, it is unclear whether or not that love is of a romantic nature.

Homura has repeated several timelines just for Madoka. In an interview with Urobuchi, he stated that Homura has repeated the same timeline (from March 16th to April 30th) approaching 100 times. 46 days (total days) x about 95 repeats would total to approximately 12 years. Meaning that Homura spent 12 years just for Madoka.

For Valentine's Day the mobile game released a short comic in which Homura gives Madoka chocolates claiming that she is her 'most precious person', and Madoka accepts them, saying that she also likes/loves Homura a lot.

In the mobile game they both said they don't have any boys they like and Madoka said she was relieved because she wouldn't like for Homura to get taken away by some boy and Homura said she wouldn't and feel the same way and both said they are happy that they have each other and would like to grow up together.

They also have a lot of official art with romantic subtext.
