Dragona Joestar (ドラゴナ・ジョースター) is a genderqueer character from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Biography[]

Dragona is the grandchild of Joseph Joestar and Suzi Q, and the child of Barbara Ann Joestar and an unnamed man. He works at a fashion boutique in Kalihi called Iko Iko. At some point, they joined a gang in the neighborhood.

One day, Dragona and their younger brother Jodio go on a job to smuggle drugs in surfboards. They steal a pickup truck and Dragona creates a fake driver's license using their Stand, replacing the original photo on the license with their own.

Appearance[]

Dragona is a slender eighteen-year-old DMAB person with tanned skin and long dreaded hair that parts into long straight bangs. Upon their head, they wear a wreath of flowers with some having elongated petals that are reminiscent of hands.

Their appearance is heavily themed after dragons, as they have several stylized dragon tattoos on their shoulders and left thigh. They also have triple claw-like tattoos on their chest, arms, and left thigh. Moreover, they wear a necklace bearing a plate engraved with a stylized "D" which is made to look like a dragon.

During their first appearance, they wear a plain dark bikini with a belt and arm rings, however in later appearances they wear a crop top and shorts, with another outfit including a sleeveless collared romper. To appear even more feminine, their chest has been given filler injections to make them resemble breasts.

When they were fourteen, they had straight hair and wore a simple collared shirt and pair of shorts. They didn't have tattoos or cosmetic injections yet.

As a descendant of the Joestar Family, Dragona has the Joestar Birthmark on their left shoulder.

Personality[]

Dragona Joestar is a jovial and carefree individual. Their most distinctive character trait is that they're DMAB with a feminine presentation. They make an effort to look like an attractive woman, most notably through their breast injections, and they have a passion for female fashion, often wearing women's clothing. This passion has lead to them working at the Iko Iko Boutique of fashion. Dragona also speaks effeminately, using the feminine first-person pronoun あたし (atashi) to refer to themself and saying things in a cute, feminine manner such as elongating the word "OK" into "Okaayy". Despite this, their brother still refers to them as his older brother, and seeing as how Dragona doesn't reprimand him for doing so, this could be Jodio being an unreliable narrator.

Dragona is an amiable, active youth who participates in various crimes alongside their brother. Their Stand, Smooth Operators, doesn't have the same offensive capabilities as Jodio's Stand; because of this, their methods of dealing with a threat tend to revolve around subterfuge or persuasion. Compared to their younger brother, they seem to have a stronger moral compass, even demanding Jodio spare the policeman who molested them. In addition, Dragona also takes their regular job at the fashion boutique seriously and heavily disapproves of their fellow gangster Paco stealing from the clients, scolding him and even pulling his ear to punish him.

From Jodio's narration, it can be inferred that Dragona is physically active. They jog every morning and follows yoga courses. Their motto that they heard from an Indian yoga instructor is to "Be sure not to push yourself too hard, but don't give up", indicating a preference for steady effort. One of Dragona's favorite foods is seemingly watermelon, as it is the only thing they for breakfast. Araki would later retcon the watermelon preference to papaya in the tankobon release.

Dragona's gender is currently unknown. While Jodio refers to Dragona as his "big bro", Dragona uses the feminine Japanese pronoun "atashi" when referring to themself.

The editorial manager of the French publisher for The JOJOlands, Pascal Lafine, explicitly says Dragona is a trans woman. While this is not to be taken as canonical as it does not come from the creator, Hirohiko Araki, it is worth noting as it comes from someone officially affiliated with The JOJOlands.[1]

Due to Dragona's ambiguity, Jojo fans argue and debate on Dragona. While some people headcanon them as a binary trans woman, others prefer to headcanon them as nonbinary/genderqueer, or mahū (Hawaiian third gender, traditionally described as a feminine-presenting DMAB individual) due to Jojolands taking place in Hawaii. Other fans point out that mahū only applies to indigenous Hawaiian people, and not Dragona since they're Japanese/British-American/Black. There's a small group of Jojo fans who consider Dragona a feminine cis male.

Other fans are uncomfortable with Dragona's reveal in the story, taking place when a police officer molests them and fetishizes them for being a feminine DMAB person. Some Jojo fans were sympathetic to one chapter revealing Dragona had also been molested by a fellow student, while others were uncomfortable with the graphic imagery of another assault on a gender nonconforming character.
