Krem“The Qunari don’t treat those… Aqun people any differently than a real man?”
Iron Bull“They are real men. Just like you are.”
―Drinks with the Chargers.

Cremisius Aclassi, also known as Krem, is a transgender male character from Dragon Age.

Biography[]

Growing up, Krem was raised as the average girl, however he knew at his young age that he was different. He would take to pretending to shave his hair to be like his father. In young adulthood, Krem’s mother began to insist that he marry the son of a wealthy merchant to ensure the family wouldn’t fall into slavery. Krem refused, ultimately destroying his relationship with her. In a charitable gesture, a Tevinter magister had his slaves make clothes for the poor, which were sold for near nothing. While the magister did save people from freezing, Krem’s father was put out of business and had no choice but to sell himself into slavery to save his family.

With his father gone and his relationship with his mother dead, Krem joined the military. Women’s roles in the Tevinter military were restricted, leading to Krem hiding his gender by bribing the healer who performed the physicals. This carried on for years, however when the healer was called away, the new healer discovered Krem’s secret and reported him. Faced with the severe threats for falsifying military documents, Krem ran. He was caught at the border of a town by a Tevinter tribune and his men. The tribune and his men wanted to “make an example” out of him. Iron Bull came to Krem’s defense, losing his left eye in the process. Afterward, Iron Bull offered Krem a job in his mercenary company, the Bull’s Chargers. Krem accepted, and would eventually rise to become Iron Bull’s second-in-command.

Maryden Halewell[]

Should Cole become more of a spirit, and if the Chargers are alive, he will set up Krem and Maryden in the Trespasser DLC. Krem and Maryden will converse about Maryden singing in the Skyhold tavern to which Krem will awkwardly mention how he “sometimes sits up in his chair to get a better look at her songs”. Maryden smiles at him sweetly. As Cole and the Inquisitor watch on, the Inquisitor can question if both Krem and Maryden will be alright when Krem “tells her”. Cole states that both of their fathers wanted them “to be happy,” implying that when Maryden finds out, she’ll accept Krem for all that he is.

Tropes[]

  • Berserk Button — Downplayed. While calling Krem a woman won’t make him hostel or violent (depending who’s misgendering him), it will make him very annoyed.
  • Easy Sex Change — While magic can be used to physically change one’s sex, non-magical Tevinter citizens like Krem are often wary of it. Krem claims he would never let any gender-affirming magic near his body.
  • Number Two — Within the ranks of the Chargers, Krem is second-in-command to Iron Bull.
  • Transgender — Krem was born biologically female, however he is male and presents himself as such.
