Caeneus is a transgender character from Kaos.
Biography[]
Caeneus was born to an Amazon tribe and raised as a girl until the age of 15. Identifying as a male despite his female body, he initially hid his true identity from the tribe, knowing that he would lose everything if he came out. He had one friend, Leos, who had to leave the tribe at 11, as the Amazons considered him a man from that age. When Leos broke the law and came back only to be killed by the tribe, Caeneus was deeply traumatized. When his mother realized he was trans, he ran away from the tribe and found a job as a bartender. He was traced by the Amazons, who killed him and buried him without the burial coin, preventing him from being reborn and trapping him in the underworld.
He worked as a dog handler, taking care of a cerberus trained to detect people buried without their coins before being reassigned to work as a diver, helping the deceased swim through the river Lethe towards the Frame and reincarnation. While on the job, he meets Euridice - who goes by Riddy - and the two quickly become close. They attempt to help Nax when he wanders the underworld, which leads them to discover that the Renewal is a lie and there is no rebirth for any human soul.
Their plans are interrupted by Riddy's husband Orpheus unexpectedly appearing in the underworld on a quest to bring her back to life. Caeneus and Riddy confess their love to each other but agree that Riddy needs to get back and warn the living about the Renewal being a lie. Alone once again, Caeneus sets to stop the deceased crossing the Frame, as it leads into the Nothing rather than to a new life on earth.
His plan is disrupted when his mother appears among the dead, having committed suicide just so that she can talk to him. She explains that it is all a part of a greater plan and drags Caeneus kicking and screaming through the Frame. Once in the Nothing, he is turned into a husk just like everyone else, to the dismay of Prometheus, who's watching the whole story unfold. For some time it seems like nothing is happening, but then Caeneus' soul is restored and he comes back to (un)life. He starts to restore souls to the husks around him, shocking Hades who was unable to perform such an act. When Caeneus' mother is restored, she calls him Kaos.
Appearance[]
Having died around 30, Caeneus retained the appearance of a person in such age despite being around 40 after living in the underworld for a decade. He is a Caucasian man with short hair and light stubble. He wears the uniform of the underworld workers.
Personality[]
Caeneus is a deeply troubled man, feeling guilty over leaving the Amazons to transition but at the same time realizing that he needed it to live. He blames his mother for betraying him and getting him killed, unaware that she was following the prophecy.
Gender[]
A transgender man, Caeneus sees his choice to live as his true self to be an act of defiance against the gods. Raised by the Amazons who believed him to be one of them, he was out only to his best friend Leos during his adolescence. Eventually, his mother realized he was trans, claiming that "the form doesn't fit the content" with him and that as a man he needed to leave the Amazons. He's conflicted about his transition, realizing that he needed it but at the same time blaming it - and himself - for destroying his family.

Riddy[]
Caeneus meets Euridice - who prefers to go by Riddy - in the underworld when they are both assigned work as divers. They bond over being stuck after being buried without the burial coins and over their shared hate for the gods. Caeneus tells his story to Riddy, who is deeply moved, and soon they become lovers. Together they discover that the Renewal is a lie and the souls of the deceased don't come back to the mortal realm. They plan to put an end to this, when Riddy's husband Orpheus appears in the underworld to take her back to earth. Riddy and Caeneus confess their love to each other but decide to part for the greater good. On her way to the mortal world, Riddy explains this to Orpheus, saying that she's in love with Caeneus and won't be going with her husband.
