Doctor Brendan Ward is a gay character from Lewis.

Biography[]

Brendan is a philosophy professor at the Oxford Univeristy, specializing in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche.

When it is revealed that a convicted cop killer Graham Lawrie may be released from prison as a result of new evidence turning up 13 years after his conviction, Brendan is approached by the police as one of the very few people who visited Graham in prison. Initially Brendan claims that he visited Graham to discuss Nietzsche, whose philosophy was a point of interest for both of them. It is later revealed that one of Brendan's students stole his ID and was visiting Graham using Brendan's identity and developing an unhealthy obsession with the killer. After a photo of one of Graham's victims, a policeman called Neil Chadwick, is found in Brendan's wallet he admits to the police that he and Neil were lovers. He claims he visited the man in prison to talk about his murdered lover - the first of Graham's three victims - but that Graham was unwilling to give him what he wanted and later even bribe his warden to beat Brendan up to dissuade him from ever visiting again.

Relationships[]

Neil Chadwick[]

Brendan and Neil were a couple for over a year before Neil was murdered. The relationship was a secret, as Neil was married and gay people weren't welcome in the police at the time (i.e. in the early 2000s). Because of this, Brendan wasn't able to attend Neil's funeral, a fact that bothers him even after 13 years have passed.
