Agatha Harkness is a queer character from WandaVision and Agatha All Along.
Biography[]
Agatha Harness is a witch from Salem, Massachusetts, who in 1693 who was tried and was going to be executed by her coven members, including her own mother, Evanora, but Agatha killed them all instead by siphoning their power. She later found her way into Westview, New Jersey in 2023 where she pretended to Wanda's nosy neighbor Agnes in order to find out how Wanda created the Hex that trapped all of Westview in her sitcom fantasies and steal her powers. After being defeated, Agatha was trapped as her "nosy neighbor" persona, Agnes, by Wanda as punishment for her crimes against Westview.
Three years later, Agatha broke free from Wanda's spell and formed the Witches' Coven to make their way to The Road and get their magic powers back.
Appearance[]
Agatha Harkness is a middle aged woman of Caucasian decent, with fair skin, brown hair and blue eyes.
While disguised as “Agnes O’Connor,” Agatha wore a variety of colorful outfits throughout the decades while keeping her signature broach.
When first confronting Wanda, Agatha is seen wearing a purple turtle neck and black pants. This outfit makes another appearance in “Agatha All Along” when Agatha is breaking out of the hex.
Agatha wears a long purple over coat with wide dark blue pleated sleeves. The inner dress is dark blue, with a light lavender neckline and her signature broach.
In “Agatha All Along” she wears this outfit again later in the episodes but it is missing the broach.
Agatha’s second outfit which is more comic accurate consists of a long, dark teal coat with a fitted waist and wide, notched lapels. She wears a white collared shirt underneath, and her broach necklace hangs around her neck. The inside of her coat is lined with purple fabric. Underneath, she wears purple pants paired with heeled boots, which she later removes when walking the witches’ road.
As a ghost she is seen appearing even more comic accurate wearing a lighter version of her witch outfit with white, lavender and blue colors. She is also rocking her comic accurate silver hair.
Personality[]
As Agnes, Agatha acts as a very perky and spontaneous person, being talkative nearly every time. She is shown to love gossiping and giving advice to the couple, especially to Wanda. She is also nosy, always barging into Wanda and Vision's house at anytime, normally without being invited. She curiously and conveniently always brings with her an item that they are needing at the moment and is always willing to help them, which Wanda sees as her just trying to be a good neighbor, but this also makes Vision suspicious of her.
However, behind her friendly and charismatic behavior, she is actually a very powerful witch who is later revealed to have been influencing Wanda, and turning her against the likes of those who would otherwise, genuinely want to help, like Monica Rambeau. She is shown to be cruel, to the point where she killed the twins' dog, Sparky, and sadistically laughed about it, and is also willing to harm young children to further her own goals. Upon being condemned by her own coven, she turns against the other witches and kills all of them, including her own mother, to survive, but shows no hint of sadness and remorse afterwards.
She is power-hungry, as demonstrated by her performing dark magic from a younger age, despite it violating the rules of her own coven, and by her fixation with Wanda, curious to understand the nature of her powers. Her slow manipulation also demonstrates the intelligence that Agatha holds. She learnt the art of magic, which required years of training, and excelled her own coven.
Sexuality[]
Agatha's sexuality is not explicitly defined. In Agatha All Along It was revealed that she had a romantic interaction with Death, better known as Rio Vidal, with whom she fell in love, leading to the birth of their son, Nicholas Scratch.
Costume designer Daniel Selon confirmed that a bracelet Agatha wears in the fifth episode of Agatha All Along was purposely designed with the colors of the lesbian flag.[1] Kathryn Hahn has said in an interview that it is not possible to label Agatha's sexuality, as Agatha can love whoever she wants regardless of gender.[2] Kathryn Hahn later said that Agatha 'does not care about men and does not need them at all'.[3]
In What-If...? Howard Stark makes a comment about Agatha and Kingo being romantically involved, in response Agatha states that Kingo is "not her type" with a smirk.

Relationships[]
Rio Vidal/Death[]
Agatha and Rio were lovers in Salem, Massachusetts, during the 1750s. After Agatha's son Nicky died in 1756, she avoided Rio for centuries, as Rio, the embodiment of Death, was the one who ferried him into the afterlife. Their first encounter in Agatha All Along hinted at their shared history, which was later confirmed in episode 4 when Rio joined Agatha's coven. The two reminisced about their past romance, and Agatha nearly kissed Rio. Throughout the series, Agatha references their romantic history, and moments before her death, she and Rio share an on-screen kiss.
Agatha All Along showrunner, Jac Schaeffer has stated that in the writers' room they emphasised Agatha and Rio to be "married in some witchy way", and worked hard to make their relationship clear on-screen.[4]
Additionally, Schaeffer would also confirm that Rio is the other parent to Agatha's son, Nicholas Scratch, at a PaleyFest panel to discuss the show after its' end.[5]
